History of Austin

This bustling city has no shortage of history! In 1835-36, Texas won freedom from Mexico and transformed into Texas Congress. In 1837, the village of Waterloo was discovered on the banks of Colorado River by the settlers. Waterloo adopted the name Austin in 1839. In 1870, Austin was made the permanent capital of Texas. Austin was named after Stephen F. Austin, the founder of the Texas Republic, and fondly known as the Father of Texas. Stephen F. Austin set up the first colonies in Austin.

In 1888, Austin observed the ebb and flow of its inhabitants because of the dispute within Texas government and downturn of Congress. Austin recouped from these problems by the late 1800s. In 1883, Austin transformed into a College town with the establishment of the University of Texas at Austin. In 1891, Austin became one of the first American cities to use an extensive street light system referred as the Moonlight Towers. In the 20th century, Austin, the capital of Texas, got the nickname “Live Music Capital of the World”. The city established huge music venues like the Hole in the Wall, Armadillo World Headquarters and many more, and attracted many great musicians.
